About

Rappahannock Woodcraft is the post-career pursuit of Rob Barr.  A former professor of political science, he now cultivates his passion for woodworking in his Fredericksburg, Virginia, shop. He turns bowls and hollow forms and makes the occasional piece of furniture.

For his turning Rob uses only salvaged wood, often donated by friends and neighbors after storms strike or trees die.  He will not cut down healthy trees just for the purpose of turning, as they are too important for our environment and communities.  He encourages efforts to preserve and promote healthy forests.

Rob's turning process reflects an appreciation for the distinctiveness of each piece of wood and attempts to reveal that character in the final form. He has a special affinity for turning green wood and scraps that might otherwise be wasted because of rot or insect damage.  Green wood is loaded with moisture after being cut but will dry quickly and unevenly once a piece is turned. The results often include wavy rims, oval shapes, and cracked piths, none of which can be predicted exactly.  Rotten or otherwise damaged wood can have crevices and voids that give pieces unique qualities.  What some might consider imperfections to be avoided are instead embraced for the authentic beauty they impart.
